We Were Lovers are playing the May Jam Union Party tonight at the Artery! $10 gets you in to see them all the way from Saskatoon plus Edmonton’s own Bebop Cortez, Kusch, Lana Lenore & some awesome live art installations. If you’re not too sore and hung over from our party tonight then you should definitely check out Sled Island’s Edmonton Warm-Up Party tomorrow night at the Wunderbar. The lineup includes The Wicked Awesomes!, Brazilian Money, The Allovers, Renny Wilson (formerly known as Sugar Glider.) That is a solid Edmonton contingent for the epic festival down in Calgary from June 20-23.

A little closer to home this weekend is the Royal Bison craft fair this weekend. All kinds of great gifts for your special someone. Especially if that special someone is you.

This Saturday be sure to take in Mike McDonald, Tyler Butler, and DoT at the Elevation Room. The ER is an interesting new space underneath Transcend Coffee on Jasper Avenue. It’s a bit of a small space, but I think that’s just the charm that will give it legs. If they haven’t already fixed this problem, lets start a petition to get some risers put in there for a stage thingy. I’ve heard complaints about the site lines at shows so far.

On Sunday, Wunderbar Turns 2! Lots of great bands playing all day, I can’t even begin to list them all. I’ve had some fun shows at the W over the years and its a wonder I managed to not make an ass out of myself by speaking with a german accent at any of them.

Family values transcending political spectrum

I first heard of Michael Walters a couple years ago when he was part of the Greater Edmonton Alliance push to put local food security on the agenda of Edmonton’s new Municipal Development Plan. The article I wrote for VUE magazine was called The Way We Grow Food in large part because of the community organizing and engagement of Michael and his colleagues.

Then in November 2010 I convinced my father to drive down to Red Deer with me for the Alberta Party Policy Convention. Neither of us had been members of any political party prior, and it was a refreshing, eye-opening experience of learning and listening. Michael was key in this process as the Provincial Organizer (video). Since then I knew that I would support the Alberta Party moving forward, and even though Rachel Notley and the NDP have my vote in Edmonton-Strathcona, I’m going to be volunteering and helping out Michael and his crew as much as possible as well in Edmonton-Rutherford.

If you don’t know where to vote check out the provincial election website. If you live in Edmonton-Glenora or Ellerslie, check out Sue Huff and Chinwe Okelu respectively. They, and the other AB Party candidates in Edmonton would make fantastic MLAs as well.
